Roadways that have bicycle and pedestrian traffic should be designed so motorists naturally travel the roadway at the desired speed. This can be accomplished by narrowing the motor vehicle travel lanes, placing street trees close to the edge of the roadway, manipulating on-street parking and introducing elements into the roadway such as medians, curb extensions and gateway treatments that interrupt long straight stretches of roadway.
The majority of spot improvements are proposed along designated bicycle and pedestrian routes. Many of the traffic calming improvements, such as short center islands and tree extensions may be applied to other residential roads in Ferndale.
